In our daily lives, we often underestimate the power of our actions and words. We interact with people every day, sometimes without realizing the profound impact we have on them. The truth is, you never really know what someone is going through. You never really know the struggles they face, the pain they hide, or the burdens they carry. Since we don’t know, it’s essential to approach others with kindness, understanding, and empathy.
Every person you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Hurtful words and careless actions can deeply wound others, even if they don’t show it. We might think we’re just being honest or giving our opinion, but those words can cut deeper than we realize. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned us about the harm of our words:
“A Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the people are safe…”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 10)
This Hadith reminds us that our words and actions should never harm others. Instead, we should strive to be a source of comfort and peace for those around us.
We often rush to judge others based on what little we see, without knowing the full story. But Allah alone knows what people are truly experiencing. The Quran advises us against making judgments:
“O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin…”
(Al Hujurat:12)
Instead of judging, we should focus on being kind. It’s better to show compassion than to be right, for kindness can heal wounds that harsh words only deepen.
You never truly know how much someone needed that sincere smile you offered them, or how your small act of kindness could change their entire day, or even their life. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“Do not belittle any good deed, even meeting your brother (Muslim) with a cheerful face.”
(Sahih Muslim 2626)
Sometimes, the smallest gestures, like a smile, a kind word, or a helping hand can make the biggest difference. You might not see the impact immediately, but rest assured, it’s there.
And kindness should never be delayed. Don’t wait for others to be kind first. Don’t wait for perfect circumstances or for others to change. Just be kind, because you never know how much someone needs it right now. Allah rewards those who are kind to others:
“Is the reward for good [anything] but good?”
(Ar Rahman:60)
If you expect the kindness of Allah, be kind to His creation. Every act of kindness, no matter how small, brings you closer to Allah’s mercy and blessings.
“Whoever is kind, Allah will be kind to him; therefore be kind to man on the earth. He who is in heaven will show mercy on you.”
(Sunan Abi Dawood 4941)
This Hadith emphasizes that kindness is beloved by Allah, and those who practice it will receive His mercy and blessings.
We never truly know the impact of our actions on those around us. The words we say and the way we treat others can either uplift or deeply wound them. Since we don’t know what others are going through, it’s essential to choose kindness every time. Remember, a kind word or a small act of kindness can transform someone’s life in ways we may never fully understand. So, be kind not because others deserve it, but because it’s the right thing to do. And in doing so, you’ll find that kindness returns to you in ways you could never imagine.
Let’s strive to be kind, to withhold judgment, and to be a source of light in the lives of those we meet. After all, you never truly know how much someone needs it.
